The 2009 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly of the National Medical Association (NMA) will convene at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas with the theme, “Patient Centered Care in the Era of Health Care Reform.” The NMA focuses on the concerns of African American physicians and the patients they serve.
This year’s Plenary Session is “Mental Health and Depression and its Relation to Key Disease States.” The Edward C. Mazique, M.D. Symposium topic is “Improving the Nation’s Health: Has Economic Recovery Legislation Brought the States any Closer to Comprehensive Reform?”
Sessions will be offered in more that 20 medical specialties in a variety of formats. Sessions will include the Traumatic Brain Injury Symposium; Structure and Function of Skin in the African American Patient; Cardiovascular Luncheon Symposium; Infectious Disease Symposium; Management of Dementia in Diverse Communities Luncheon Symposium; Pathogenesis of Asthma and the Role of Inflammation Overview; HIV Update 2009; Rheumatology Update Series; Spine Symposium: Diseases of the Spine; Maternal Outcome Disparities: What Have We Learned and What Must We Yet Discover; Retina Symposium; Immunization Update; Update on Pediatric GI; Women’s Health Symposium: Cancer in African Women; and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia/Voiding Dysfunction/Urologic Pelvic Pain.
This year’s Special Workshops include Basic Life Support (BLS)/Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); Internal Medicine: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Re-Certification Course for Providers; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Course; and OB/GYN Section: Ultrasound with Live Patient Interaction Encompassing 3D and 4D Filming.
Social Events
The Golf and Tennis Tournament at the Bali Hai Golf Club will be held on Saturday, July 25 at 6:30 a.m. The President’s Ball will be held in the Mandalay Bay Hotel on Tuesday, July 28 at 8 p.m.

The 69th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will offer a comprehensive educational program featuring important developments in diabetes research and strategies for treatment at the Morial Convention Center. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear the latest on cardiovascular disease risk with diabetes; diabetic microvascular complications; hypoglycemia; interpretation of glucose monitoring data; emerging treatment options; prevention and treatment of obesity; insulin signaling and insulin action in type 2 diabetes; and the genetics of type 1 diabetes.

Interest Group Discussion Sessions will offer attendees the chance to meet with colleagues to exchange ideas. Interest groups include Behavioral Medicine and Psychology; Foot Care; Endocrinology, Health Care Delivery and Public Health; Diabetes in Youth; Nutritional Sciences and Metabolism; Education; Epidemiology and Statistics; Pregnancy and Reproductive Health; and Exercise.

The Opening Reception will feature live jazz and refreshments at Generations Hall on Friday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m.
The 5K@ADA run/walk through the French Quarter will start at Jackson Square on Sunday, June 9, at 6:30 a.m.

Digestive Disease Week - Chicago, IL

Digestive Disease Week 2009 will convene at McCormick Place in Chicago for educational sessions sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).
This year’s Combined Clinical Symposia offered jointly by the DDW sponsoring societies are Pancreatic Cancer: Are We Ready to Screen?; Multimodality Detection and Management of Barrett’s and Dysplasia; Who Owns Achalasia?; Hepatic Resection for Liver Masses; Predicting and Treating Variceal Hemorrhage; Management of Hepatitis C Non-Responders and Relapsers; 911 for Gastroenterologists (GI Emergencies); Bariatrics for the Endoscopist: Bypasses, Roadblocks and Detours; Gastrointestinal Surgery in the Elderly; Autoimmune Disorders of the Pancreas and Biliary Tract: An Enlarging Spectrum; Common Approaches to Pelvic Floor Abnormalities; and Detecting and Managing Colonic Dysplasia in IBD: Now and the Future.
The AASLD will offer a full-day workshop on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Clinical Symposia include the AASLD/NASPGHAN Pediatric Symposium: Cystic Fibrosis Liver Disease in the 21st Century; Avoiding HBV Drug Resistance: How Many Drugs?; and Therapeutic Advances in Acute Liver Failure.
The AGA Institute Spring Postgraduate Course is Applying New Evidence to Clinical Practice. The AGA will also offer a selection of Focused Clinical Updates and Focused Research Roundtables and several Problem-Based Learning Luncheons.
The ASGE Postgraduate Course is Endoscopy at Home and Around the World: New Developments and Innovations for Your Practice. The ASGE Masters Series Course is Enteroscopy in the 21st Century and the Hands-On Course is Advanced Endoscopy Techniques.
The SSAT Postgraduate Course is Acute Care Gastrointestinal Surgery: Thinking on Your Feet—A Case-Based Course. Joint symposia are SSAT/ASCRS Symposium: Surgical Management of Complex Colorectal Disorders and SSAT/AHPBA Symposium: Managing Complications of Acute Pancreatitis.
