Southern Medical Association - Nashville, TN

August 7–9, 2008

The Southern Medical Association (SMA) will convene for its Scientific Assembly, Advances in Medicine 2008, at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The curriculum was designed to be of particular interest to physicians practicing in the specialties of cardiology, dermatology, emergency medicine, family practice, geriatric medicine, gynecology, medicine, obstetrics, oncology, orthopaedic and trauma surgery, pediatrics and adolescent medicine, plastic and reconstructive surgery, radiology, and surgery.

The Opening Ceremony will feature the keynote address, "Leadership—The Essential Elements and Why Failure is Not an Option," given by Donald J. Palmisano, M.D., J.D., a former president of the American Medical Association. The President’s Symposium will focus on “Urgency in Expanding a Culture of Leadership for All Physicians.”

The first day of the meeting will offer Hot Topics in the Medical Field, a look at recent developments published in several specialties, and New Drugs Update 2008, featuring indications, clinical trials and adverse reactions for pharmaceutical agents introduced within the last 12 to 18 months.

The five educational tracks that will be provided for physicians are the Oncology, Surgery, and Plastic Surgery Track; SMA Medicine Specialty Track: Non-Specialty Care for the Specialist; Orthopaedic, Trauma and Critical Care Track; Dermatology Track; and Women’s Health Track. Educational sessions include Treatment Options for Advanced Melanoma; Head and Neck Cancer; Multidisciplinary Management of Breast Cancer; Geriatric Cardiology; Orthopaedic, Trauma, and Critical Care Abstract Session; Assessing and Treating Fractures in Trauma Situations: What All Physicians Should Know; Dermatological Consultations; Obstetrics; and Office Gynecologic Procedures.

Social Events

The Presidents’ reception, honoring the presidents of the SMA and the SMA Alliance, will feature beverages, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment on Friday, August 8 for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The SMA Golf Tournament will be held Wednesday, August 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Gaylord Springs Golf Links, located just a few minutes from the resort; transportation to the event will be provided.

This meeting has been designated for a maximum of 17 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Registration is $400 for SMA member physicians and $425 for nonmember physicians.

National Medical Association - Atlanta, GA

July 26–31, 2008

The 2008 Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly of the National Medical Association (NMA) will convene at the Atlanta Convention Center with the theme “Elimination of Health Disparities through History and the Collaboration of Health Professionals.” The NMA’s focus is to address the concerns of African American physicians and the health issues related to African Americans and medically underserved populations. Educational sessions will be offered in more than 20 medical specialties.

Special Sessions include the Edward C. Mazique, M.D. Symposium, U.S. Health Care Reform—Are We Asking the Right Questions?; HIV/AIDS in the African American Community: From Crises to Calamity; Medical Missions and Global Health; the American Cancer Society/National Medical Association Collaboration in Addressing Cancer Disparities; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Diabetes Symposium; and the W. Montague Cobb, M.D. Lecture and Symposium, The Role of Cultural Competency Skills in the Elimination of Health Disparities.

Special Workshops include the Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia Workshop; the Asthma Management Certification Course; and the Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Re-Certification Course for Providers.

Social Events

The First Annual Walk a Mile with a Child & 5K Run for Men’s Health will take place on Saturday, July 26 at 7 a.m. This community outreach program will encourage mentoring and offer health screenings, games and interactive exhibits.

The President’s Ball will be held on Tuesday, July 29 at 8 p.m. at the Westin Atlanta Hotel. A Golf and Tennis Tournament sponsored by the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association will begin at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 26 at Eagle’s Landing Country Club.

The NMA will hold a Post Convention Seminar at the Marco Island Beach Resort in Marco Island, Florida, from August 1 to 3.

American Diabetes Association - San Francisco, CA

June 6–10, 2008

The 68th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) will be held at the Moscone Center with an extensive selection of educational sessions for physicians who treat patients with diabetes. The meeting will cover topics including microvascular complications in diabetes; cardiovascular risk assessment; nutrition and exercise; pharmacologic treatment options; genetic studies; islet transplantation research; and insulin resistance.

This year’s Plenary Lectures are Epigenetics—Environmental Influences in Changing Genes; Taste Receptors; and Health Care in the Technology Revolution. A Panel Discussion at the end of the Scientific Sessions will address Glucose and Heart Disease—Implications for Clinical Practice.

A five-kilometer run/two-kilometer walk will take place on May 17 at 7 a.m. with proceeds to benefit prostate, bladder and kidney cancer research.

Digestive Disease Week - San Diego, CA

May 17–22, 2008

The 39th Annual Digestive Disease Week (DDW) will offer more than 400 educational and scientific sessions sponsored by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT).

The DDW sponsoring societies will jointly provide 12 Combined Clinical Symposia on topics of broad interest: The Optimal Management of LGI Bleeding; Esophageal Cancer; Medical and Surgical Management of NAFLD; Pancreatic Cancer; Hepatitis B; Managing Complications of GI Procedures; Managing the Endoscopy Patient on Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Therapy; Fecal Incontinence—New Perspectives on Early Detection, Current and Future Therapies; Management of Gastric and Ectopic Varices; Obesity Surgery: Endoscopic and Surgical Management of Complications; The Big Polyp: Who Owns It?; and Balancing the Use of Biologics and Surgery in Management of Ulcerative Colitis.

The AASLD will host a research highlights session summarizing the past year’s important findings. Clinical Symposia topics include Elastography for Diagnosing Liver Fibrosis and Portal Hypertension; Extracorporeal Albumin Dialysis for Liver Failure; and HCV Treatment in Patients with Renal Failure.

The AGA Institute will offer Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2008: Challenges and Controversies, a two-day postgraduate course. Special Symposia are MicroRNA in Cancer and Immune Systems; and Aneuploidy, Apoptosis and Cancer. Clinical Symposia will cover a wide range of topics including Advances in Imaging for the Evaluation and Management of Small Bowel Disorders; Clinical Issues in IBD; Difficult Diarrheas; Emerging Role of Genetics in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders; and Severe Acute Pancreatitis: Revising the Atlanta Classification and Update on Management.

The ASGE sessions will include the half-day Hands-On Course: Advanced Imaging, focusing on high definition and narrow-band imaging to detect upper and lower GI tract neoplasia. The Postgraduate Course is Endoscopic Practice 2008: At the Interface of Evidence and Expert Opinion. Clinical Symposia topics include Antibiotics, Antiplatelets, Anticoagulants and Endoscopy; Bariatric Surgery and Its Complications: The Role of the Endoscopist; Imaging the Small Intestine; and Polypectomy: Issues and Answers.

The SSAT Postgraduate Course is Unresolved Problems and Evolving Solutions in Surgical Gastroenterology. The SSAT State-of-the-Art Conference is Optimal Timing of Surgery for IBD, covering the indications for surgery in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. For the second year, the SSAT will hold a series of debates on Controversies in GI Surgery.

Sightseeing Tours

Tours of San Diego will be offered for DDW participants and guests. Organized sightseeing trips include a city highlights tour, a walking tour of the Gaslamp Quarter, a dinner cruise on the bay, a visit to Coronado Island, a tasting at wineries in the Temecula Valley, and a kayaking adventure through the caves of La Jolla. American College of Physicians - Washington, D.C.

May 15–17, 2008

Chicago Skyline Internal Medicine 2008, the annual meeting of the American College of Physicians (ACP), will convene at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Scientific Program aims to help participants apply recent advances in clinical medicine; implement changes in clinical practice; improve physical examination skills; and implement improvements in medical practice.

This year’s keynote speech will be given by Karen Davis, Ph.D., president of the Commonwealth Fund, on “Patient Centered Medical Homes: Key to a High Performance Health System.” New this year, a Practice Management Track will offer a focused look at the business of running a medical practice. Chicago Skyline The 56th Annual Clinical Meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) will be held in the Morial Convention Center.
